Credit Hours

Generally a student earns one credit for each 15 hours of class contact. Classes normally meet 45 hours in a semester for 3 units of credit. Students should plan on two hours of preparation/study for each in-class hour. Laboratory classes require two or three hours of lab per week for each semester hour of credit.

Privacy of Student Records − Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) allows present and future students to have access to their individual educational records, provides basic protections of privacy of their records, and allows them to request that certain “directory information” be kept confidential. Complaint Process Notice

Mountwest Community and Technical College (Mountwest) takes very seriously complaints and concerns regarding the institution.  Most complaints can be resolved at the college level.  You may file your complaint through initiating the process by first contacting your advisor.  You may also contact the Dean of Student Services if your complaint involves student interaction, Lisa Penix. If your complaint regarding Mountwest has not been resolved at the institution, you may present your complaint as follows.

 

Copyright Infringement-Policies and Sanctions

  • Copyright infringement is the act of exercising, without permission or legal authority, one or more of the exclusive rights granted to the copyright owner under section 106 of the Copyright Act (Title 17 of the United States Code). These rights include the right to reproduce or distribute a copyrighted work. In the file-sharing context, downloading or uploading substantial parts of a copyrighted work without authority constitutes an infringement.
  • Penalties for copyright infringement include civil and criminal penalties. In general, anyone found liable for civil copyright infringement may be ordered to pay either actual damages or “statutory” damages affixed at not less than $750 and not more than $30,000 per work infringed. For “willful” infringement, a court may award up to $150,000 per work infringed. A court can, in its discretion, also assess costs and attorneys’ fees. For details, see Title 17, United States Code, Sections 504, 505.
  • Willful copyright infringement can also result in criminal penalties, including imprisonment of up to five years and fines of up to $250,000 per offense.

Constitution Day

Mountwest Community & Technical College participates in educational activities during the month of September in honor of Constitution Day each year.

2022 Constitution Day Activities included Peer Coaches handing out pocket constitutions and encouraging students to register to vote.

2021 Constitution Day Activities included Peer Coaches handing out pocket constitutions.

2020 Constitution Day Activities included posting about Constitution Day in our Monty Monthly Newsletter and posting information on the Student Government’s Facebook page.

2019 Constitution Day Activities included Peer Coaches handed out pocket constitutions and hung constitution flyers at the main campus.

2018 Constitution Day Advisors of the Mountwest Veteran Program distributed pocket constitutions to students.  Cory Payne, Federal VA Education Liaison Representative for West Virginia, was the guest speaker.

2017 Constitution Day Mountwest Student Government handed out pocket Constitutions to the students along with Schoolhouse Rock constitution playing on video screens throughout the building.

2016 Constitution Day Representative Evan Jenkins visited Mountwest and spoke to students, faculty, and staff about the United States Constitution.

Student Financial Assistance

Federal Student Financial Aid Penalties for Drug Law Violations

A conviction for any offense, during a period of enrollment for which a student was receiving Title IV, HEA Program (federal) funds, under any federal law involving the possession or sale of illegal drugs will result in the loss of eligibility for any Title IV, HEA grant, loan or work-study assistance (HEA Sec. 484(r)(1)); (20 U.S.C. 1091(r)(1)).
