Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at Mountwest Community and Technical College prepares students with the knowledge, skills and professional behaviors necessary to provide safe and effective basic patient care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. Through a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory practice, and supervised clinical experience, students learn to assist patients with activities of daily living, measure and record vital signs, maintain infection control standards, communicate effectively with patients and healthcare teams, and ensure patient comfort and dignity in a variety of healthcare settings.

Program Outcomes:
• Provide basic nursing assistant care to patients/residents
• Perform comfort and personal care measures
• Provide basic emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual support to patient/residents
• Cooperate with the healthcare team members to coordinate delivery of care and seek guidance when necessary
• Competently perform activities of daily living (ADL’s), such as bathing, feeding, and mobility assistance
• Exhibit professional conduct, appearance, and ethical behavior when providing care
• Perform procedures with regard to the principles of infection control
• Identify and perform infection control measures
• Perform basic emergency for all aged patients/residents
• Demonstrate procedures in a safe therapeutic manner in the health care setting to meet federal/state mandates
• Recognize the basics of home care, home health care, independent living, assisted living care, and long-term care
• Complete a total of 120 hours of the program and have their skills checkoff list complete

Admission Requirements

The college adheres to an open admission policy which means applications with a high school diploma or GED are eligible for admission. Applicants with neither a high school diploma nor GED may be admitted on a conditional basis.
