Introducing PLAN, Mountwest’s Prior LearningAssessment Network. We’re a dedicated team ready to assist you in exploring how your life experiences can count toward a rewarding college degree.

Let’s make a PLAN together!

Mountwest Community and Technical College provides students with the opportunity to earn credit through non-traditional avenues, often called “Credit for Prior Learning.” 

Prior Learning is learning that may have taken place in other settings of your life, perhaps during military service, independent studies you have taken, volunteer or community service, on-the-job training, or industry certifications and licenses you’ve achieved.  

Any of these could qualify as college level learning – and could qualify you for college credit. You could possibly shorten the requirements for your degree by demonstrating that you qualify for Credit for Prior Learning.

How do I find out if my Prior Learning Experience counts for college credit?

You can demonstrate your college-level knowledge by providing documentation of successful prior testing, in the form of an experience portfolio, or by taking College Course Challenge Exams or standardized tests.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), also known as Credit for Prior Learning, is divided into three categories: Provide It. Pass It. Prove It.

Provide it

You’ll collect and submit any document(s) proving you completed course(s) or exam(s) that are recognized sources worthy of college credit. Examples may include:

• The American Council on Education (ACE) College Credit Recommendation Service

• The National College Credit Recommendation Service (National CCRS)

• MCTC Articulation Agreements (the Program Chair or Dean in the area of study)

• Military training records (contact our Veterans Coordinator, Rich Gross at gross1@mctc.edu or 304.710.3416).

Pass it

Credit by Examination is a great way to earn college credit for what you already know. Visit the Credit by Exam page to see a list of all the MCTC courses that can be satisfied by examination.

You can take Credit by Examination, or College Course Challenge Exams, at Mountwest’s on-site testing center, located in Room 106 of the main building. Please visit the Testing Center webpage. Website: www.mctc.edu/testing-center/ for directions and hours of operation.

Prove it

The Portfolio Development program gives you an opportunity to prove that your experiential learning is equal to college level training. Keep in mind that credit is awarded for learning, not for experience, and there is no guarantee that credit will be awarded. Mountwest’s Credit for Prior Learning Specialists are happy to assist you in making your case and making the determination.
