The Office of Financial Aid at Mountwest Community & Technical College works to communicate valuable information to students to make their education experience as cost effective as possible. In order to secure the most beneficial financial aid package, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on January 1, or as close to this date as possible. Beginning with the 2017-2018 year students may begin completing the FAFSA on October 1, each year.
All financial aid is awarded for one year at a time. You must reapply for aid each year for the upcoming academic year. You do not have to be enrolled as a full-time student to receive aid, but should generally be enrolled at least six hours. A student reapplies for aid by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The use of an FSA User ID for both students and parents (for dependent students) is recommended to complete the online FAFSA. Parents may use the same FSA User ID for multiple children. The recommended completion date for the FAFSA is March 1. All West Virginia residents should complete the FAFSA no later than April 15 each year in order to ensure consideration for all available types of financial aid. Tax information is needed to complete the FAFSA. You do not have to file your taxes in order to complete the FAFSA. You may estimate income information, but should correct the information once your taxes are filed for the year.
All notices of deadlines are posted on our web page. Required document notices are sent via the campus assigned e-mail provided by Mountwest Community & Technical College; notices will not be mailed except upon student request. New students who are not yet admitted to Mountwest Community & Technical College will be initially contacted through the e-mail address supplied on the FAFSA. Once students are admitted to Mountwest Community & Technical College all further notices will be sent using the campus assigned e-mail address. Spam filters should allow e-mail from Mountwest Community & Technical College. All awards and missing documents may be viewed using your myMCTC account.

Mountwest pays financial aid refunds after the term begins. We provide bookstore vouchers for students with pending financial aid at least two weeks prior to the start of term and during the first week of class. Students may purchase or rent books using pending financial aid if they have a complete financial aid file, no financial holds and are otherwise eligible for financial aid. Students may opt out of the use of the bookstore by not using their book voucher.

Effective July 2013:
Congress enacted legislation that limits subsidized student loan eligibility to 150% of the program length. Students in two-year programs are eligible for subsidized student loans for the equivalent of three years.
Effective July 2012:
Congress enacted legislation that limits the Pell Grant to 12 full-time semesters and requires students who are selected for verification to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool or supply the school with a copy of a Tax Return Transcript.
