Mountwest student named New Century Scholar

03/13/2014

Huntington, W.Va. - Lorraine Klover, a student at Mountwest Community & Technical College, was selected as one of only 51 students for the 2014 New Century Scholars program. Klover was chosen from more than 1,700 students from more than 900 community colleges. Judges considered grades, leadership, activities, and how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.

Klover will receive a $2,000 scholarship and be presented at the American Association of College Presidents (AACC) Convention in Washington, D.C. She credits the Mountwest faculty, staff and administration with making the transition into college easy.

“Going back to school after 20 years was really intimidating, but earning a scholarship like this one is affirmation that I made the right choice,” Klover said. “I chose Mountwest because of the affordability, easy enrollment process and degree programs, but the supportive faculty, staff and administration is what kept me going.”

Klover’s achievement came as no surprise to Linda Vinson, one of Klover’s professors at Mountwest.

“Raine has that special quality that every teacher is pleased to encounter,” said Vinson. “Her maturity and respect for learning encourages her fellow students to raise their own level of academic involvement.”

Klover is set to graduate this May from Mountwest with an associate’s degree in online journalism and is already looking forward to her next challenge. She has been accepted into Marshall University’s 2 + 2 program where she hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree in public relations and go on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Kentucky. Eventually, she hopes to work in agricultural communications.
