Mountwest awarded grant for tech scholarships
May 13, 2013
Huntington, W.Va. - The West Virginia Council for Community & Technical College Education voted Thursday to award a $16,125 grant to fund technical program scholarships for current and future Mountwest Community & Technical College students.
Mountwest is the first college to be awarded funding through the newly established Tech Scholars Program, which matches private funding for technical program scholarships dollar-for-dollar. The matching grant complements the private gifts of Advanced Technical Solutions, Ashland, Inc., Marathon Petroleum, Rudd Equipment Company, W.W. Grainger, Inc., and other individual donors to the program.
The Tech Scholars Scholarship Program was designed to attract students into key technical programs that lead to high-wage, high-demand employment. Mountwest was awarded the match to assist students enrolling in Culinary Arts, Electronics Technology, Industrial Management, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Network Systems Administration, Network Systems Development, Network Systems Security, Physical Therapist Assistant, Web Development, Welding Technology and more.
Sheanna Spence, Director of Development for Mountwest, said this award will help the College continue to make an economic impact on the community and offer students educational opportunities they may otherwise not have had.
“We’re grateful to have been awarded this scholarship money through the Council because of the generosity of our private donors,” Spence said. “We’re looking forward to being able to provide more students with financial aid, and therefore, the opportunity to pursue one of these many exciting and growing fields.”
As the Mountwest Foundation seeks continued growth for its scholarship program, private gifts are eligible to participate in the Tech Scholars matching program.
