Mountwest students demonstrate servant leadership

December 04, 2012

Huntington, W.Va. - To lead, one must first learn to serve. At least that’s the principle being taught in Betty Dennison’s Leadership Development Studies classes at Mountwest Community & Technical College.

Thursday, December 6, at 8:30 a.m. her students will read a copy of “The Night Before Christmas” to both of the first grade classes at Guyandotte Elementary School and then distribute a copy of each book along with a reindeer stuffed animal to each student.

The students have been raising funds since the beginning of the semester to be able to purchase the books and stuffed animals. The Mountwest students partnered with West Virginia Read Aloud and Cabell County Read Aloud for the training to be a certified West Virginia Read Aloud volunteer.

The project demonstrates the importance of leaders serving others before leading them,” said Dennison. “The servant-leadership project culminates with the last reading at Guyandotte Elementary, and I’m thrilled our students get to be part of it.”
