Mountwest offering variety of summer courses

Huntington, W.Va., :As many students are preparing for commencement ceremonies, Mountwest Community & Technical College faculty and staff are gearing up for the many unique learning opportunities that come with summer. In addition to traditional summer classes, Mountwest is offering a unique set of courses through its Inland Waterways Academy, as well as rolling out the Summer Bridge Transition Program catered to help high school graduates planning to attend Mountwest in the fall.

The workforce development courses will take place at the Spring Valley Career & Technical Education Center with the exception of the Deckhand Basic Training course, which will take place at the Inland Waterways Academy. Industrial Electricity I:  8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Basic Hydraulics System:  8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Phlebotomy:  8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
EKG:  8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Deckhand Basic Training

The Summer Bridge Transition Program is designed to enrich academic skills for those high school graduates who do not test directly into college-level courses. The two-week program will focus on enhancing skills in the areas of math, reading and English. 

Students will be selected for the program based on assessment scores (ACT, Accuplacer, or Compass) and date of their enrollment application to Mountwest. Students will be required to meet each day for a total of four hours per day. Students will also be responsible for completing in-class and out-of-class assignments. Upon completion of the program, students who successfully complete the final assessment will be placed directly into the college-level courses required for their degree program.
