White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. - Mountwest Community & Technical College was named Grand Champion at the 7th Annual Cast Iron Cook-Off competition at The Greenbrier on January 21. The winning team was led by Chef and Lead Instructor Isabel Cross and Sous Chef and Culinary Arts Program Director Lawrence Perry. Team members were students Sue Richardson, Andrew Stepp, Cate Haught, Annette Sears, Amanda Bruton, Zach Chancey and Billy Desimore.
Mountwest utilized 11 West Virginia products in their four courses that consisted of Wilson Mill Farms trout cakes with WV Microgreens and Blue Smoke hot red pepper jelly vinaigrette over green tomatoes, Appalachian chestnut ravioli with white cheddar cheese and wild ramp sauce, Gardner Farm hasenpfeffer served over cheese grits with a pea and arugula puree, and Greenbrier peach clafouti with Mountaineer blackberry coulis and Black Oak Holler bacon ice cream.
“This is quite the achievement for our school,” said Lawrence Perry. “It is amazing to see the how much the Culinary Arts Program at Mountwest has developed since I was a student in 2004. Being named Grand Champion is definitely icing on the cake.”
Perry went on to say, “Chef Cross is such an asset to this program. She brings such great enthusiasm and a wealth of experience and knowledge to the classroom, and to any event she does. I am honored to have her as a colleague and friend.”
Chef Cross and Chef Perry confirmed that Mountwest will participate in the event again next year.
