Mountwest professor and students develop artificial hand for six-year-old boy

Christmas came early for a local boy whose wish list included something most people take for granted – a hand. Theodore Triplett, program coordinator of engineering design technology at Mountwest Community & Technical College, and his students presented Cooper, a six-year-old boy born without a left hand, with an artificial one that they developed using a 3D printer.

Mountwest to host Huntington Centennial Toastmasters Club

Mountwest Community & Technical College will open its doors to the Huntington Centennial Toastmasters Club at the beginning of 2016. The club, which aims to help individuals improve their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere, meets the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. and will be sponsored by Mountwest’s office of Human Resources, Employee Development & Payroll. Established in 1972, the club has met in a variety of locations throughout the years, most recently at the Central Christian Church.

Mountwest to offer peer recovery support specialist certificate

Spurred by the area’s epidemic of overdoses from substance abuse, Mountwest Community & Technical College will offer a one-year peer recovery support specialist (also known as a recovery coach) certificate beginning in spring 2016.

Mountwest announces winner of Christmas card design contest

Mountwest Community & Technical College hosted a Christmas card design competition among its students for the second consecutive year. Twenty-three entries were submitted by students of different majors who were enrolled in a graphic design course at Mountwest. A card by Cameron Shannon, a freshman majoring in animation and game development, was selected as the winner.

Jordan Javorskey’s first grade class at Guyandotte Elementary School had special visitors this week. Mountwest celebrates first graduating recipient of Karen S. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, gears up for Pink Out

In 2009, Michelle Oney was attending Marshall Community & Technical College, now Mountwest Community & Technical College, while working full-time as the assistant station manager for Allegiant Air at the Huntington Tri-State Airport. On Nov. 20, at the age of 36, she was diagnosed with stage three breast and lymph node cancer. Donna Donathan, a professor at Mountwest, encouraged Oney to fight the disease.
